I've Never Done Anything Like This Before: A Beginner's Guide to Pole Dancing in Perth

Let's be honest. The idea of walking into a pole dancing class for the first time is a little nerve-wracking.

You might be wondering: Will I be the only beginner? Do I need to be fit? Will it be awkward?

We hear this all the time at Polaris Studios, and we want to put your mind at ease before you even walk through our door. The truth is, almost every single one of our students started exactly where you are right now: curious, a little nervous, and wondering if this is really "for someone like me."

It is. We promise.

What actually happens in a beginner pole class?

Your first class at Polaris is all about getting comfortable with the pole, with the space, and with yourself. We start slow. You'll learn how to grip the pole properly, try a few foundational spins, and get a feel for how your body moves. There's no pressure to nail anything perfectly. There's no judgment. There's just you, the music, and a room full of beginners doing the same thing for the first time.

Our instructors are warm, experienced, and genuinely passionate about making you feel welcome. They've all been where you are. They know exactly how to break things down so you feel capable, not overwhelmed.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. Full stop.

Pole dancing is the fitness. You don't need to arrive fit; you'll get there through the classes. Flexibility comes with time and consistency. Strength builds gradually as your body adapts. Many of our students had never done any structured exercise before joining Polaris, and within a few months they were doing things they never imagined possible.

All body types, all fitness levels, all ages. That's what we mean when we say everyone is welcome.

What should I wear?

Shorts and a singlet or crop top are ideal. You'll want some skin contact with the pole because that's what helps you grip and hold positions. Don't worry about what you look like. Everyone is focused on their own journey.

No heels required for beginners (though you're welcome to bring them). Bare feet or grip socks work perfectly.

What should I bring?

  • A water bottle

  • A small towel

  • An open mind and a willingness to laugh at yourself (it's part of the fun)

Where are you located?

We're based in Osborne Park, Perth, easy to get to from Scarborough, Leederville, Stirling, Balcatta, and surrounding northern suburbs.
